Global study & Australia: start with your purpose
PTE Academic is the Pearson test for global academic study and accepted Australian visa uses. Your course, visa subclass or professional body sets the requirement—not the country where you take the test.
Checked 28 October 2026. Follow the official rules for your application date.
Applying to a university or college
Start with the exact course, campus and intake. Use Pearson’s acceptance finder to locate an institution, then open its own admissions page. Record the named test, overall score, individual skill scores and any result-age condition.
If the course page and your offer differ, ask admissions for written clarification. A general acceptance listing is a starting point, not your course’s final requirement.
For example, the University of Melbourne directs applicants to their course’s English level and imposes test conditions as well as scores. This illustrates why a country-wide acceptance list is not enough. Another institution can set different conditions; do not transfer this university’s rules to every course.
Applying for an Australian visa
Home Affairs lists PTE Academic among its approved English tests. The relevant visa subclass decides the evidence, scores and permitted test timeframe. University admission and visa evidence are separate checks.
Australia changed its approved English-test arrangements on 7 August 2025. Match the rules to your test date. Use our Australia guide for the wider visa and study context.
For a new appointment, do not build your plan around an old “50, 65 or 79 in each skill” visa chart. Current skilled-migration level thresholds are ability-specific. Equally, a Student visa evidence threshold is not a university admission offer.
Keep separate requirements separate
- Admission: confirm the course’s accepted test and scores with the institution.
- Visa: confirm the exact visa subclass and evidence rules with the government.
- Professional registration: check the relevant regulator’s own English standard.
Build a requirement record before a study plan
Suppose you intend to study in Australia and later enter a regulated profession. Make three rows in your notes: course admission, the intended visa and the professional body. Add each authority’s URL, named test, overall and skill thresholds, timing rule and submission method. Leave an unanswered field visibly unresolved rather than copying a number from the neighbouring row.
Compare your current results only after those requirements are clear. This avoids practising toward an overall score while overlooking a higher writing requirement or a result that will be too old at course commencement. The official-check page turns that record into a pre-booking checklist.
Taking the test in India
Your destination does not require you to assume an overseas test appointment. Check the India fee and ID guide and Indian centre search for the product you need. Allow time for travel, result processing, sharing and a possible retake before the earliest receiving deadline.
After you confirm the required product and four ability targets, use the study-plan guide. Do not buy Core or Home preparation simply because the resources also say PTE.
Choose your next step
Read the PTE Academic guide for test format and scoring. Then complete the institution and visa authority check before using the booking guide.
For Canadian permanent residence, use the Canada route instead. For a UK application requiring a four-skill secure test, use the UK study and work SELT route.
