PTE for Australia: study, visa scores and test dates

Australian Home Affairs lists PTE Academic as an accepted centre-based English test. Universities and professional bodies have their own rules. Start with the purpose of your application and your test date; there is no single PTE score that works for every Australian use.

Which PTE test is accepted for Australian visas?

The Home Affairs approved-test guidance names PTE Academic. Do not substitute PTE Core, Home or a remote test because they also carry the PTE name. The department requires testing at a secure centre and does not accept completely online, at-home English tests as visa evidence.

Identify the visa subclass, evidence requirement and relevant date before preparing. Some applicants can provide other permitted evidence; whether that applies is a visa-rule question, not something an exam score calculator can decide. The study and Australia purpose guide helps organise the first decisions.

Current skilled-migration English thresholds

For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the official level pages specify the following minimum scores. These define the English level, not every condition for a visa or invitation.

English levelListeningReadingWritingSpeaking
Competent47485154
Proficient58596976
Superior69708588

Checked 28 October 2026 against the Home Affairs Competent, Proficient and Superior pages.

Worked example: one skill below the level

Consider Listening 58, Reading 60, Writing 70 and Speaking 75 from a test taken after the change. The first three meet the Proficient minimums, but speaking is below 76. This result does not establish Proficient English, regardless of its overall score. It is an illustrative comparison, not a visa assessment.

Student visa scores and university admission

Home Affairs’ current subclass 500 table gives an overall PTE Academic minimum of 47 for the standard test-evidence column for tests from 7 August 2025. The listed reduced thresholds are 39 with the specified eligible 10-week ELICOS, foundation or pathway arrangement, and 31 with at least 20 weeks of qualifying ELICOS.

ELICOS means English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students. The lower columns depend on the actual course arrangement and all stated conditions; they are not alternatives anyone can choose. Evidence exemptions and other subclass rules must also be checked on the Student visa page.

The university or college can ask for a higher overall result and individual skill minimums. Check the exact course, intake, campus and offer. A visa threshold is not proof that an institution will admit you, and a course offer is not a visa decision.

Older tests, validity and points

For Academic tests taken on or before 6 August 2025, the earlier minimums were 50 in each skill for Competent, 65 for Proficient and 79 for Superior. Do not apply those flat numbers to a new test. In particular, “79 each” is not the current Superior threshold for a post-change result.

Home Affairs says qualifying older results can be accepted up to 6 August 2028, depending on the visa and its own evidence timeframe. That outer transition date does not make every old result usable until then. Check when the test was taken and the time limit for the application or invitation stage required by the subclass.

For points-tested routes, first verify the level you actually meet, then use that route’s points and eligibility rules. A language level alone does not establish total points, nomination eligibility, an invitation or permanent residence. Pearson’s normal two-year report-access period is also a separate issue from a government evidence window; arrange required verification in time.

Professional registration is another independent check

For a regulated profession, identify the responsible registration board or assessment body and read its own English standard. Check the accepted test, every ability score, test age and whether it permits results from more than one sitting. Do not import a visa table into a nursing, teaching or engineering application.

For health professions, begin with Ahpra’s English-language registration standards and the relevant National Board. For engineering migration assessment, use Engineers Australia’s assessment guidance. A professional assessment and visa approval remain separate decisions.

The institution, visa and body checklist helps you keep these records separate instead of assuming one acceptance letter covers all purposes.

Testing in India or Australia

You can plan an Academic appointment in the country where you intend to sit it, using Pearson’s live search. The India guide covers Indian fee and passport planning; the Australia centre guide explains the local location check if you will test there.

Select the testing country’s currency and verify the exact address, appointment and ID. Read the booking rules before paying and the results guide before sharing. For preparation, turn the actual four ability thresholds into a targeted study plan, not a generic “score 79” promise.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE Core accepted instead of Academic?

No substitution is established by the Australian rules described here. Home Affairs’ approved list names PTE Academic; Core’s Canadian use does not transfer to this requirement.

Is 65 in every skill Proficient English?

For tests from 7 August 2025, the minimums are Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69 and Speaking 76. A result of 65 in every skill does not meet the writing and speaking thresholds.

Can my Indian PTE result be used?

The test location alone does not decide acceptance. It must be the accepted product at a secure centre and meet the scores, dates and evidence conditions of the receiver.
