For PTE Answer Short Question, listen for exactly what is being requested and reply with one word or a few words. Accuracy and speed of recall matter more than explanation, so give the shortest complete answer you are confident is correct.
Current format and test coverage
The task appears in PTE Academic, Academic UKVI and Core. Pearson lists a 3–9 second recorded question and 10 seconds to answer. The microphone opens automatically after the audio, without a short tone. You cannot replay the prompt or record again, and an image may sometimes appear.
The task is deliberately brief. Do not use the available seconds as a target response length. Pearson warns that waiting more than three seconds after recording begins can close the microphone. Start when the screen shows “Recording,” not after a separate planning period.
How scoring differs by test
Pearson scores the answer as correct or incorrect according to whether the words are right. No response or an incorrect response receives no credit. The current score guides identify Listening as the Academic/UKVI contribution and Listening and Speaking as the Core contribution. Vocabulary is the task trait being assessed, not an additional communicative-skill score.
That difference is why it is important not to generalize scoring across versions. In either test, a longer answer receives no extra credit simply for being longer.
Decode the question before retrieving a word
Listen for the interrogative and the category it signals:
- Who usually requires a person or role.
- Where calls for a place.
- When calls for a time or period.
- What do we call asks for a term.
- Which tool or object asks for a concrete noun.
Grammar narrows the response too. “What substance…” suggests a singular noun; “Which people…” may require a plural group. This small check can prevent a conceptually correct but grammatically unsuitable answer.
Work through original examples
Consider: “What instrument is used to view very small cells?” A short and clear response is “a microscope.” For “Which season comes directly after spring in the Northern Hemisphere?” answer “summer.” For “What do we call a person who designs buildings?” answer “an architect.”
These are original practice items, not recalled exam questions. Each tests direct understanding plus vocabulary recall. A full sentence would be acceptable only if it stays accurate. But it creates more opportunities for hesitation and irrelevant wording.
More original questions with answer checks
Have a study partner read each question once while you keep the answers hidden. These are original vocabulary exercises, not exam predictions or an official answer bank.
| Question | Concise answer | What the question asks for |
|---|---|---|
| What do we call the written list of topics for a meeting? | An agenda | A document, not the meeting leader |
| What do we call the place where books are borrowed? | A library | A place, not the person working there |
| What word means that an event happens once every year? | Annual | Frequency, not a calendar date |
| Which shape has exactly three straight sides? | A triangle | A shape, not a measurement |
| What do we call the time by which work must be submitted? | A deadline | A final time, not the work itself |
| What is the opposite of increasing a quantity? | Decreasing it | A change, not a negative number |
| What do we call a person who receives a message? | The recipient | The receiving role, not the sender |
| What do we call a journey to a place and back again? | A return journey | Both directions, not only the outward trip |
A prompt about “where books are borrowed” calls for “library,” not “librarian.” Both words belong to the same topic, but only one answers the requested category. Likewise, “annual” answers a frequency definition; saying “January” names a month instead.
Learn the concept as well as the label. If you remember only a fixed question-and-answer pair, a paraphrase can break the association. Rephrase “the time by which work must be submitted” as “the final submission time” and practise retrieving the same term.
Do not give two competing answers such as “a library or a bookshop.” A bookshop sells books and does not answer this borrowing definition. Concision helps you commit to the appropriate term without adding a contradictory alternative.
Build a useful practice system
Organize vocabulary into categories: workplaces, tools, natural processes, time, education, measurement and everyday services. Practise in both directions: term to definition and definition to term.
Use audio rather than reading every prompt. Hear one item once, leave a short gap and record the answer. After a set of 20, group errors:
- the key word was not heard;
- the concept was understood but the term was unavailable;
- the answer came too slowly;
- the response contained an unnecessary guess.
Review the missed categories, then test them later with newly worded questions. Use the vocabulary guide for definition-and-context practice. If you heard the term correctly but cannot say it intelligibly, isolate it in pronunciation practice, then return it to a spoken answer.
Common Answer Short Question mistakes
Typical mistakes include waiting for a tone that does not come, repeating the question, explaining the answer, supplying several alternatives and answering a related question instead of the one asked. Learners also overfocus on obscure trivia when broad vocabulary and careful listening are more transferable.
If you know the answer, say it promptly and clearly. If you do not, avoid a rambling chain of guesses that adds no scoring advantage.
Choose the right listening drill
Answer Short Question requires you to supply an appropriate answer, not repeat the audio. In Repeat Sentence, by contrast, you must reproduce the actual sentence. Confusing those goals can lead to repeating a question instead of answering it.
Practise using official resources for your Academic or Core booking. Original vocabulary exercises develop recall, but no small list can predict the questions you will receive or guarantee a score.
Frequently asked questions
Is a full sentence required for Answer Short Question?
No. Pearson instructs test takers to answer with a single word or a few words, and says extra words do not earn extra marks.
Is Answer Short Question scored for speaking in PTE Academic?
Academic/UKVI contributes to Listening, while Core contributes to Listening and Speaking. Vocabulary is the scored task trait, not a fifth communicative skill.
Conclusion
Answer Short Question is a compact listening-and-recall task. Identify the requested category, give the exact term and stop. Audio practice with original definitions will strengthen both understanding and fast vocabulary access.
