Choose between PTE Academic and IELTS Academic by checking acceptance first, then comparing how each test lets you show English. Neither is universally easier, and a convenient format is irrelevant if the accepting body does not accept that exact product.
Confirm acceptance before comparing features
Check the university course, visa authority and professional regulator separately. A university’s general acceptance does not prove that every course accepts the same test, and a standard academic test may differ from a secure version required for immigration.
Record the exact product, overall requirement, skill score minimums, validity rule, last test date and score-sharing method. Do not rely on a general blog list where the organization’s own current page is available.
Compare the core format
| Feature | PTE Academic | IELTS Academic |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Computer-based test-centre exam | Computer-based delivery; Writing on Paper offered in selected markets; online Academic acceptance is separate |
| Skills | Speaking, writing, reading and listening | Listening, reading, writing and speaking |
| Speaking | Recorded through a headset microphone | Live interview with an examiner |
| Structure | Three parts with tasks that test more than one skill | Four named sections. Speaking is a separate interview |
| Score scale | 10–90 | 0–9 bands, including half bands |
| Approximate test length | About two hours | About two hours 45 minutes, including an 11–14-minute Speaking test |
Important IELTS delivery update for 2026
IELTS announced a move away from fully paper-based tests from mid-2026, with rollout timing varying by market. In selected markets, Writing on Paper means Listening and Reading remain on computer while Writing responses are handwritten; it is not the old fully paper-based test. Check the official update and the delivery mode actually offered for your Indian booking.
IELTS Online is a separate remote Academic option in some countries. Institutions decide whether to accept it, and UKVI tests must be taken at an official centre. Do not confuse “IELTS on computer” at a centre with an at-home test. The same care applies to test-centre requirements for Australia.
Understand the speaking difference
PTE speaking responses are recorded at a computer in the test room. This can suit candidates who prefer a predictable interface. But nearby candidates may also be speaking. IELTS Speaking is an interactive interview with an examiner and includes questions, an individual long turn and discussion.
Test your preference rather than guessing. Record a PTE-style response with a headset, then complete a realistic IELTS-style interview practice with another person. Check which setting allows clearer, more natural evidence of your ability.
Compare writing, reading and listening
PTE includes tasks that test more than one skill where one response can draw on or contribute to more than one skill. IELTS organizes work into four sections; IELTS Academic Writing includes a visual-information Task 1 and an essay Task 2. Both require accurate understanding, vocabulary and grammar. But their response actions differ substantially.
Try official sample tasks from both. Measure instruction errors, timing, typing or handwriting comfort, note-taking, and how easily you recover after a difficult question.
Compare scoring carefully
PTE Academic reports an overall score and four skill scores from 10–90 and uses automated scoring, with some expert review in the scoring process. IELTS reports an overall band and section bands from 0–9. Trained examiners assess speaking and writing under published rules.
The scales are not interchangeable admission rules. Pearson published updated concordance research in July 2025. But the place that will use your score decides which PTE or IELTS result meets its rule. Use its current table rather than an old conversion image.
Current overall concordance: useful context, not permission to substitute
Pearson’s July 2025 concordance summary gives these approximate overall relationships:
| IELTS Academic band | PTE Academic overall range |
|---|---|
| 6.0 | 47–54 |
| 6.5 | 55–62 |
| 7.0 | 63–70 |
| 7.5 | 71–78 |
| 8.0 | 79–85 |
| 8.5 | 86–89 |
| 9.0 | 90 |
Do not apply an overall row to every skill. For example, the same report’s IELTS 7.0 row lists PTE Speaking 76–82 and Writing 69–76, not 63–70 for those skills. Concordance is approximate research, not a guarantee that the same person earns the paired result, and it does not override a university or visa authority’s published thresholds.
Compare results, booking and cost
As checked on 28 October 2026, Pearson’s India finder listed ₹18,900 for PTE Academic. IDP India’s published standard IELTS fee was ₹19,000. These are standard test-price comparisons, not quotes for every UKVI, retake or preparation product. Confirm Pearson’s checkout and IDP India’s fee page before paying; no unsupported PTE tax breakdown is inferred.
For results, Pearson says usually two days, sometimes up to five working days or longer if further checks are required. IELTS publishes 1–5 days for computer tests, while its remote Online test has a different timeline. Both can be affected by review. Keep time for the receiving organisation to process the result too; see our PTE results guide.
Check live provider pages for result timelines, fees, dates, rescheduling and local centres. Factors that change the practical decision include:
- distance to an eligible centre;
- keyboard and headset comfort;
- the actual IELTS computer/Writing on Paper option and separate Speaking appointment details;
- result deadline and retake window;
- accessible arrangements;
- score-sharing process and cost;
- whether a UKVI or other secure product is required.
A lower advertised fee can become more expensive after travel or an unnecessary retake.
Use a decision matrix
Score only rules that matter to your application:
| Decision criterion | Priority | PTE evidence | IELTS evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accepted for exact route | Essential | Check | Check |
| Skill requirement achievable | High | Official sample/level check | Official sample/level check |
| Speaking environment fit | Medium | Recorded headset trial | Interview trial |
| Centre/date convenience | Medium | Live locator | Live locator |
| Accessibility needs | Essential if relevant | Provider confirmation | Provider confirmation |
If either test fails an important rule, do not allow preference points to make it “win.”
Check the retake difference before relying on it
IELTS One Skill Retake can be available after an eligible full computer test at a participating centre, but the receiving organisation must accept that result. Do not assume every visa or university does. Check the official One Skill Retake conditions before treating this as a deciding advantage.
PTE does not offer a separate single-skill retake: a new attempt is the full test, subject to Pearson’s retake policy. Use the booking guide for the policy context rather than assuming you can immediately retake only a weak skill.
Make a fair trial before choosing
After confirming both tests are accepted, try representative official material—not just one easy item. For PTE, include a recorded description, exact repetition, typed summary and timed Reading set. For IELTS, include Academic Task 1, Task 2 and a realistic interview. Record where you lost meaning, violated an instruction or ran out of time. Compare the learning work required, not uncalibrated mock numbers on different scales.
Common comparison mistakes
- Asking which exam is easier before checking acceptance.
- Comparing PTE Academic with IELTS General Training when the application requires academic English.
- Using an obsolete score-conversion table.
- Choosing from one practice question instead of a representative sample.
- Assuming computer scoring means no language judgment or that an interview is subjective guesswork.
- Ignoring skill score minimums and secure-test requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Not universally. The computer interface, speaking mode, task types and scoring experience suit candidates differently. Compare both with your abilities after checking acceptance.
Can I convert an IELTS requirement to PTE myself?
Use the accepting body’s own test-and-score table. Pearson updated its concordance research in July 2025, and an institution may set its own requirements.
Which test gives results faster?
Pearson says PTE results are usually available in two days but can take up to five working days or longer for review. IELTS publishes 1–5 days for computer tests. Neither timeline guarantees your result by a particular deadline.
Conclusion
PTE Academic may suit candidates comfortable with an entirely computer-based, recorded test and tasks that test more than one skill. IELTS Academic may suit those who prefer its four-section design and live speaking interview. The correct choice is the accepted test that lets you show the required scores reliably—not a universal winner.
